GALERIA POP WUJ

En el dialecto Maya K'iche', Pop significa petate y Wuj puede decir hoja en lo que refiere al libro sagrado de la sabiduria ancestral y Cosmovisión Maya.

​

GALERIA POP WUJ se fundó en el año 1999, en Chichicastenango, Guatemaya, en el seno de una familia maya K'iche'. Su hubicacion se encuentra en el lado sur, de la Iglesia de Chichicastenago,  conduce al centro ceremonial Pascual  Habaj, en la casa 2-27 Barrio Chilima.

 

Esta pequeña semilla surge a traves de trabajo artesanal-artistico del taller de talabarteria en cuero, a traves del Abuelo Sr.(+) Pedro Leon Xirum,  conjuntamente con el Sr. (+) Miguel Leon Ignacion,  posteriormente con los Hermanos Leon Cortez, quienes empezaron sus primeros paso en la pintura. Fue asi como se pusieron los primeros pilares de esta galeria, a partir de esta historia de tres generaciones, de abuelos, padres e hijos, es asi como surgio la GALERIA POP WUJ. 

 

Se ha coordinado muchas actividades relacionadas a la creatividad, dirigido a los  niños jovenes y señoritas de este area de  Chichicastenango, nos hemos dado la tarea de impulsar el arte y la educacion artistica. Con este lapso de tiempo se ha podido lograr, y fortelecer el arte maya, y atender a muchos grupos para desarrollar diferentes propuestas artisticas y culturales con la ayuda de Aporte para la Descentralizacion Cultural ADESCA.

 

Se ha podido tener la visita de amigos extranjeros que les gusta  el arte, y asi fue como se pudo conocer a Dr. Hans Guggenheim, quien le motivo a impulsar conjuntamente con el  Sr. (+) Miguel Leon Ignacio, quienes pusieron los primeros pilares de la Galeria fue asi que se fundo la ASOCIACION DE ARTE Y CULTURA MAYA ITZAT, ya desde el año 2,001 legalmente constituido con bases legales inscrita en le registro civil de la Municipalidad de Chichicastenango, departamento del quiche bajo partida 43-2001 folio(s) 82 y 83 del libro de Personeria jurida.

Gallery Pop Wuj

In the K'iche' dialect, Pop means Mat and Wuj means Leaf, which refers to the sacred writings in the book of the Mayan Cosmovision.

​

GALERIA POP WUJ was founded in 1999 by a K’iche' Mayan family in the town of Chichicastenango, Guatemaya. It is located south of the Chichicastenango Church in the central ceremonial Pascual Habaj in the neighborhood of Chilima in house #2-27.

​

The seed of this project was planted by the grandfather Sr. Pedro Leon Xirum. He was an artisan working together in a leather workshop with his son Sr. Miguel Leon Ignacio who then collaborated with the Leon Cortez brothers who started their first steps in painting. The first pillars of the Gallery were established through these three generations: grandfather, father and sons to create the GALERIA POP WUJ.

The family has coordinated many creative activities to promote art and education with local youth and adults in Chichicastenango. Since the gallery's foundation, the family has been able to achieve and strengthen Mayan art as well as assist many groups in developing various art and cultural proposals and projects with the help and contribution from ADESCA, Guatemalan cultural decentralization organization.

The Gallery has received many international visitors who have an interest in art and Mayan culture. Through these frequent visits, the family met Dr. Hans Guggenheim who supported through collaboration with Sr. Miguel Ignacio to found the ASOCIACION DE ARTE Y CULTURA MAYA ITZAT, the Art and Mayan Cultural Association. Since 2001, it has been legally constituted and inscribed in the civil register of Chichicastenango’s Municipality in the department of Quiche. It can be found under the entry of 43-2001 on pages 82 and 83 in the legal personality.
